To support the exercise A ‘Schools Crime and Arson Reduction Seminar’ was held at Dunstable Community Fire Station on Wednesday 7th October 2009. The seminar was attended by approximately 65 delegates, mainly head-teachers and governors. The seminar topics were: Maintaining schools for the future, legal obligations and enforcement, a school fire case study, BB 100 toolkit results, arson and crime in schools.
Following the background work a memorandum of understanding between Bedfordshire Police and Bedfordshire and Luton Fire and Rescue Service was agreed and signed at the seminar. The memorandum commits both services to conducting joint school crime and arson evaluations and where necessary conduct a fire safety audit at the same visit. Thirty of the highest at risk schools will receive a tri-party visit this academic year.
The success of the day was in no small way due to the excellent efforts and commitment of the three Local Authority Health and Safety teams who assisted with the completion of the BB100 toolkit assessments for all LA schools. A further fire safety seminar is planned for March 2010. This seminar will focus on sustainable schools and in particular sprinklers in schools. The seminar will be aimed at portfolio holders, planners and those with the ability to make and inform policy.
