Bedfordshire and Luton Combined Fire Authority has set its council tax precept at just £78.84 per year for the average household (Band D).
The decision was agreed at the meeting of the Combined Fire Authority on Friday, 8 February 2008 and takes effect at the beginning of the financial year 2008/09.
The precept represents an increase of 4.3% - significantly below the Government's request for council tax increases to be limited to 5%. This is despite increasing demands being made upon the Bedfordshire and Luton Fire and Rescue Service (BLFRS) in terms of keeping the local community safe by preventing, protecting and responding.
In an assessment by the Audit Commission announced on 31 January 2008, Bedfordshire and Luton Fire and Rescue Service was one of only two services nationally that had improved in two areas of assessment and is: Improving Well and Performing Well.
"This is a real cause for celebration." said Chief Fire Officer Paul Fuller. "This success is a tribute to staff and Combined Fire Authority members. The public of Bedfordshire and Luton have a fire and rescue service of which they can be proud."
Chairman of the Combined Fire Authority (CFA) Councillor Anthony Duggan said; "On behalf of the CFA I would like to congratulate the officers and staff of Bedfordshire and Luton Fire and Rescue Service - it has been no mean feat to achieve this score. We have a strong service and authority - which is setting an example to others around the country."
