Candle safety presentations were staged by Bedford
firefighters in readiness for the Diwali Festival of Lights five day celebration
which began on 9 November 2007.
To keep community fire safety messages relevant to all those they serve, firefighters staged a "live fire" demonstration in four Sikh Temples in the town.
From late October, Bedfordshire and Luton Fire and Rescue Service was busy promoting firework safety across the county with a series of newspaper and radio advertisements reminding people to take care during the firework festival season which included , of course, Guy Fawkes night on 5 November 2007.
Diwali parties traditionally involve candles and fireworks. The candle safety demonstrations were held in key venues in Bedford and Kempston. The first was held on 3 November 2007 at the towering temple of Guru Nanak Gurdwara - the largest of its kind the UK.
Firefighter Deon Shields took along a specially adapted kitchen fire unit to show how quickly candles can set light to curtains and loose clothing - a dramatic display witnessed by dozens. He and colleague Suzanne Hastings were invited back to the temple on the festival of Diwali itself on 9 November 2007 - when 1,000 candles were lit within the temple buildings.
