joined the Luton Fire Service in 1964 (he still lives in Luton) and after
promotion in 1974 has now completed 34 years as a team leader.
Caroline Alexander, Service Control Commander says: "Working in an emergency service control centre can be both stressful and distressing - but Tony’s calm and methodical approach to all manner of disasters helps his team feel supported and confident."
Fire and Rescue Service Equality and Diversity Awards 2008, run by the Department of Communities and Local Government Nominations:
BLFRS Firefighter Danny Roberts for his work with a football team for young people with disabilities in Dunstable. BLFRS helped by providing goalposts and footballs from "reward" money the Service had been given by Central Government. Through this project BLFRS has formed links with new people, including parents, and encouraged them to sign up for home fire safety checks.
BLFRS Youth Development Officer Cassandra Swan for her work in developing a national Youth Training and Safeguarding Children package with the Fire Service College. This course is now available nationwide for firefighters who want to learn more about making the most of working with young people.
"Female firefighter trainee" Helen Shaw for her work in identifying positive reasons as to why women should consider a career in the fire service. Helen, a Fire Service Auditor from Grant Thornton LLP, worked with BLFRS and the Fire Research Training Trust to gain an insight into the route taken by recruits into the fire service.
