Footballing First in Dunstable
Dunstable Firefighter Danny Roberts has
achieved a footballing first by developing a free coaching course for disabled
children in the area. An ex footballer himself, Danny will run the football
sessions open to special needs children of all ages.
"My footballing days were coming to an end but I wanted to stay in the game and decided to become a coach. I realised there is little coaching available for special needs kids and, with the support of Dunstable AFC and the Fire Service, have been able start free football coaching sessions", said Danny.
Danny was helped by Beds Football Association Disability Officer Les Dedman and advertised the coaching with a flyer designed by students at Weatherfield Special Needs School. The response has been very positive.
"The sessions are run at the Dunstable Leisure Centre and already we have 20 children taking part of all ages and all levels of ability", added Danny.
Bedfordshire and Luton Fire and Rescue Service (BLFRS) have supported the group by providing footballs, goals and specialised training equipment and Dunstable AFC are funding the training venue.
BLFRS Deputy Chief Fire Officer Graeme Smith said: "We are very happy to help Danny, this is a great initiative and a very worth while cause".
