Safety in South Beds Supported by Fire and Rescue Service
Chief Fire Officer Paul Fuller officially opened an event in South Bedfordshire aimed at testing how children would cope in a range of emergency situations.
The event ran over five days from 8 October and began with a launch at Kingsland Community College.
Around 320 children (aged eight and nine years old) from Tithe Farm, Thomas Whitehead, St. Vincents RC VA, Hawthorn Park, Downside, Houghton, Thornhill and Hillcrest Schools went along to learn about different hazards they may face in their day to day life and how to avoid them.
A number of agencies were involved during Community Safety Week and they each hosted a particular theme:
Bedfordshire and Luton Fire and Rescue Service who held a quiz on fire safety
Bedfordshire Police who used their Mobile Police Unit for the children to discuss road safety issues
South Beds District Council
Environmental Health Team who the effects of smoking
South Beds District Council Leisure Team who ran a "Snakes and Ladders" game
St. John Ambulance Service carried out an activity around first aid techniques
South Beds District Council Community Involvement Team who produced a simulated activity on burglary
The Safer Luton Partnership had an activity called "Gingerbread Man" that discussed the effects of drugs
Bedfordshire County Council Trading Standards Team tested the children on food labelling
