Meanwhile colleagues, still on the outside of the yard, used heavy cutting equipment to remove chains on a security gate to allow paramedics to get into the yard and take over treatment of the boy.
Time of the 999 call to Bedfordshire and Luton Fire and Rescue Service was at 21.06 on 7 April 2009 to a food and drink warehouse in Kingway, Luton. Two crews from Luton, and the Emergency Rescue Unit was sent, led by Station Commander Mark Barter.
He said: "There a lot of people at the scene. It seemed that the boy, with others, had put a ladder up against the building but when he stepped off the ladder it was onto a plastic vision panel in the roof which gave way and he fell ten metres to the floor.
Firefighters climbed up over a two storey roof next door to get into the yard and then forced open a large metal door to get inside and reach the boy. Firefighters administered Oxygen and Trauma Care immediately."
The boy was taken to hospital by the ambulance service.
In following TV, radio and press interviews Station Commander Barter asked that young people during school holidays took care and avoided temptation to play in dangerous locations.
